A Community-Based Conservation Approach
With the Tonkolili Project, local community members are paid staff of the project as bio-monitors and advocates for the chimpanzees. The villages also receive aid with sustainable agriculture, innovative conservation initiatives, and various other individual needs. In return, they maintain a complete mortarium on killing the chimpanzees in their forests.

Mabureh
Mabureh’s only source of drinking water, the Pampana River, has become unsafe to drink due to mining up-river. In 2023, the Tonkolili Project raised enough money to hire local contractors to build a well, allowing the entire village to have clean water again.
